Loan Cancellation/Reduction Request Form

Who May Use This Form

Only the borrower of the loan may use this form to request a change to a federal student loan. For example, a parent may not adjust a Federal Direct Student Loan because the student is the borrower, not the parent. Invalid requests will be denied.

When to Use This Form

This request must be completed no later than 30 days from the date on the notification e-mail or letter stating that loans have been applied to the student's bursar account. Requests for cancellation/reduction of loans after 30 days will not be honored.

How to Use This Form
  • Please note required fields are indicated by *, an asterisk.
  • The terms of use must be accepted by the borrower in order to process the request.
  • The student borrower's IU e-mail address must be entered below. The IU e-mail account is the official means of communication with IU students.
  • Multiple loans may be reduced/cancelled at the same time by using the "Add Request" button below.
  • Cancellations/reductions for loans outside of the available terms may be requested of the Office of the Bursar via e-mail sent to bursar@indiana.edu.
  • Nothing will be submitted until "Submit" is pressed.
Result of Using This Form
  • Use of this form will result in the execution of the requested action. Requests will be processed in a timely manner and may not be reversed once completed.
  • The request may be adjusted by Office of Student Financial Assistance or the Office of the Bursar if all or part of the loan has already been credited or refunded.
  • Unsubsidized loans will be reduced/cancelled before subsidized loans.
  • Cancellation of the first disbursement of a loan will automatically cancel the second disbursement.
  • Any refunds that have been issued by the Office of the Bursar may need to be returned in whole or in part.
  • If this cancellation/reduction leaves an outstanding balance on the student's bursar account, the balance must be paid in full with personal funds by the due date to avoid late payment fees and other institutional penalties.
